Cambodia's mining history dates back to the ancient Khmer Empire, when gold, silver, copper, and iron were extracted and used for crafting jewelry, tools, and weapons. During the French colonial period, mining operations intensified, and significant deposits of gems, iron, bauxite, manganese, and other minerals were discovered. However, after Cambodia gained independence in 1953, mining activity declined due to political instability and conflict.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Cambodia's government started granting licenses for exploration and exploitation of mineral resources to foreign investors. However, the mining industry faces several challenges, including insufficient infrastructure, lack of transparency and accountability, and social and environmental concerns. Moreover, Cambodia recently imposed a complete ban on sand exports due to environmental degradation, and similar measures may be taken to protect other natural resources from over-exploitation. Despite these setbacks, Cambodia's mining sector remains significant due to its potential mineral wealth and increasing demand for construction materials, precious metals, and other resources in the region.
