Professional Mining Analysis, News & Education related to Fiji.
Fiji's mining history dates back to the early 1870s when gold was found in the Ba River. This discovery led to a gold rush in the region and the establishment of several mining companies. Mining operations continued throughout the 20th century, with copper and zinc becoming important minerals for extraction. In the 1970s, bauxite mining also became a significant industry in Fiji.
However, with the decline in gold prices and depletion of resources, many mining companies ceased operations in Fiji. Despite this, small-scale mining continues to be practiced, predominantly by artisanal and small-scale miners. Additionally, recent efforts have been made to promote investment in Fiji's mining industry, particularly in the exploration of mineral deposits such as gold, silver, and copper. The government is also working towards developing policies and regulations to promote responsible mining practices and decrease negative environmental impacts.
