Liberia is a mineral-rich country that has a long history of mining activities dating back to the pre-colonial era. Gold, diamonds, and iron ore have been the main minerals extracted in Liberia. In the 1920s, the Dutch mining company Bong Mining Company began iron ore mining in the country, which became the backbone of the Liberian economy and an important export product.

However, civil unrest and a prolonged civil war from 1989 to 2003 severely impacted the mining sector and the country's overall economic stability. Large-scale mining activities were put on hold, and many mining companies left the country. Since the end of the war, Liberia has been working to rebuild its mining sector and create favorable conditions for foreign investments. The country has reviewed and updated its mining policies, and in recent years, there has been an increase in exploration and mining activities by both local and international companies in Liberia.
