Professional Mining Analysis, News & Education related to Malaysia.
Mining in Malaysia dates back to the 1800s when tin was discovered in the Kinta Valley, Perak. This resulted in a mining boom in the country and led to the development of many small mining towns such as Ipoh and Taiping. The export of tin became one of the main sources of revenue for the British colonial government, and by the 20th century, Malaysia became the world's largest producer and exporter of tin.
In the 1970s, with the depletion of tin reserves, the focus of mining in Malaysia shifted to other minerals such as iron ore and bauxite. Today, Malaysia is one of the top producers of tin, with more than half of its mining activities concentrated in the states of Perak and Selangor. In addition to tin, Malaysia also produces significant quantities of gold, iron ore, coal, and natural gas. However, the mining industry in Malaysia has also faced environmental challenges such as land degradation and water pollution, and efforts are being made to balance economic development with sustainable mining practices.
