Professional Mining Analysis, News & Education related to Romania.
Romania has a rich mining history that stretches back to the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, Romanian mines were among the largest and most productive in Europe, providing raw materials for the production of iron, silver, and gold. The mining industry continued to grow throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, with new deposits of coal, salt, copper, and other minerals being discovered and exploited.
However, the mining industry in Romania was greatly affected by political changes and economic turmoil during the 20th century. Nationalization of mines in the 1940s and 1950s led to inefficiencies and a lack of investment in modern equipment and technology. The 1989 revolution and the subsequent transition to a market economy brought challenges to the industry, with many mines being closed due to lack of funding and competition from imports. Today, the mining industry in Romania is much smaller than it once was, with only a few active mines producing salt, coal, gold, and other minerals.
