Sudan

Sudan has a long history of mining dating back to ancient times. The country was famous for its gold mines, starting from the 3rd century BC when the Nubian Kingdom of Kush controlled the region. The Kushites were skilled in mining and smelting techniques, and their gold was highly prized by neighboring civilizations. During the medieval period, gold mining continued to be an important industry in Sudan, as evidenced by Arab writers who documented the abundance of gold in the region.

In more recent times, Sudan experienced a renewed interest in mining in the 1990s with the discovery of large deposits of gold, copper, and zinc. The government encouraged foreign investment and liberalized the mining sector, leading to a surge in mining activities. However, the lack of regulatory mechanisms led to environmental degradation and social issues, such as land disputes with local communities. Despite these challenges, mining remains an essential economic activity in Sudan, contributing to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing employment opportunities.
