Mining in Uganda has a history that dates back to pre-colonial times, with evidence of gold mining in the western region of the country. However, formal mining activities began in the 1920s with the discovery of tin deposits in the Rwenzori Mountains.

During colonial rule, Uganda's mining sector was dominated by foreign companies that engaged in extractive activities without much consideration for local communities or the environment. After independence, the government introduced policies aimed at boosting local participation in the sector, but these efforts were often thwarted by corruption and mismanagement. In recent years, the country has seen a resurgence of interest in its mining potential, particularly in gold, oil and gas, and rare earth minerals, and there is growing awareness of the need to ensure that mining activities are conducted in a sustainable and responsible manner.
