Ukraine has a rich mining history dating back to prehistoric times when flint mining was conducted for tool making. Later on, during the Middle Ages, mining for salt and iron ore became a significant industry in Ukraine. In the 19th century, coal mining started to take off as an industry, with the opening of the first coal mine in eastern Ukraine. Coal was a key resource for the development of the Ukrainian economy and became the backbone of the country's industry during the Soviet era.

In the post-Soviet era, the mining industry in Ukraine underwent significant reforms and structural changes. A number of mining companies were privatized, and foreign investors were encouraged to enter the market. Today, Ukraine is one of the largest producers of iron ore, coal, and uranium in Europe. The mining industry continues to play an important role in the Ukrainian economy, providing jobs for thousands of people and contributing to the country's export earnings.
