Professional Mining Analysis, News & Education related to Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe's mining history can be traced back to pre-colonial times when gold and iron were mined in large quantities. Economic activity centered around the Great Zimbabwe ruins and the surrounding areas where numerous gold mines were located. The country's gold production peaked in the 13th century before declining in the 14th century due to political instability.
During the colonial period, the mining industry continued to grow with the discovery of more mineral deposits such as chrome, nickel, and asbestos. Large mining companies were established and the country became a major exporter of mineral commodities. However, the mining industry declined sharply in the 2000s due to political turmoil, poor infrastructure, and lack of investment. The government has recently made efforts to revive the sector through reforms aimed at increasing transparency, attracting foreign investors, and improving the country's infrastructure.
