Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SQM. SQM produces lithium, iodine, potassium, and other specialty plant nutrients and industrial chemicals in Chile. The company has been in operation for over 50 years and has grown to become a global leader in lithium production, with approximately 20% global market share.
SQM’s operations are primarily located in northern Chile, where the company extracts lithium, iodine, and potassium from the Salar de Atacama, a salt flat located in the Antofagasta region maintaining annual LCE production of 220-250 kMT. The company is currently undertaking expansion projects to increase lithium carbonate capacity by 2025 including capacity expansions in Chile and lithium hydroxide plant in Western Australia developed jointly with Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy & Fertilisers. These expansions will allow SQM to meet rapidly growing lithium demand driven primarily by electric vehicles.
In 2022, 78% of SQM’s gross profits (US$9.3 billion) were contributed by lithium and derivatives. SQM also produces specialty plant nutrients, iodine derivatives, potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, and industrial chemicals. The company commercializes products to over 100 countries globally through offices located in Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Chile.
