Bulgaria has a rich mining history that dates back to ancient times. Some of the earliest evidence of mining in Bulgaria can be traced back to the Thracians, who were known to have extracted gold, silver, copper, and iron from the mountains in the region. The Romans also established mining operations in Bulgaria, exploiting the rich deposits of gold, silver, and lead in the Balkan Mountains. During the Ottoman period, mining continued to play an important role in the Bulgarian economy, with the extraction of coal and other minerals becoming increasingly important.

In the 20th century, the Bulgarian government made significant investments in the mining sector, leading to the expansion of existing operations and the development of new mines. However, following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the transition to a market economy, the mining sector in Bulgaria suffered a significant decline. Many mines were closed and production levels dropped dramatically, leading to a loss of jobs and economic hardship in mining communities. Today, the Bulgarian mining sector is still recovering from this decline, but there are ongoing efforts to revitalize the industry and maximize its contribution to the national economy.
