Serbia

Mining has a long history in Serbia, dating back to ancient times. The country is rich in mineral resources, including copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, magnesium, and coal. During the Ottoman period, mining was carried out on a small scale, mostly for building materials and salt. In the 19th century, the mining industry in Serbia experienced significant growth, with the discovery of copper and lead deposits. Serbia's leading mining region, Bor, was established in 1903 with the opening of the copper mines. The mines were later expanded to include gold, silver, and other precious metals.

During the socialist era, mining in Serbia was nationalized, and the industry underwent modernization and expansion. The mining sector was a significant contributor to the country's economic growth during this time, generating employment and exporting minerals. However, with the collapse of Yugoslavia and the subsequent political and economic instability in the 1990s, mining suffered a decline. Since the early 2000s, Serbia has been working to revive its mining industry, with the establishment of new mining companies and the privatization of existing state-owned companies. Despite some challenges, Serbia's mining sector continues to be an essential part of the country's economy.
