Suriname

Suriname has a long history of mining, dating back to the early 1700s when European colonizers discovered the abundant deposits of gold and other minerals in the country. The earliest form of mining in Suriname was carried out by slaves under harsh conditions, providing much-needed wealth for Dutch investors.

During the 20th century, Suriname's mining industry experienced a period of growth and modernization. The government established the state-owned company, Suriname Aluminum Company (Suralco), which began producing bauxite in the 1930s, making Suriname one of the world's largest bauxite producers. The mining industry became a major source of employment and revenue for the country, contributing significantly to its economic development. However, environmental concerns and disputes over land ownership have led to protests and debates about the future of Suriname's mining industry.
