Ardea Resources' Kalgoorlie Nickel Project Goongarrie Hub Secures Lead Agency Status from Western Australian Government

Ardea Resources' KNP Goongarrie Hub receives Lead Agency Status, securing coordinated Western Australian government support across approvals and infrastructure pathways.
- Kalgoorlie Nickel Pty Ltd's application for Lead Agency Status, submitted to Western Australia's Department of Energy and Economic Diversification in late 2025, has been formally approved.
- The status recognises the KNP Goongarrie Hub as a project of state significance, providing coordinated engagement across government agencies.
- The Goongarrie Hub hosts 584 million tonnes of resource containing 4.0 million tonnes of nickel, forming part of one of the largest nickel-cobalt resources in the developed world.
- The project is designed to supply nickel and cobalt, two key inputs for batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
- The joint venture, involving Ardea Resources, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., now holds whole-of-government support spanning both the Western Australian state and Commonwealth levels.
Ardea Resources Limited (ASX: ARL) is an Australia-based nickel development company focused on the Kalgoorlie Nickel Project, located in Western Australia's Eastern Goldfields region. The company is developing the project through a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., targeting a multi-decade nickel operation producing more than 30,000 tonnes per annum. The broader KNP hosts Australia's largest nickel-cobalt resource, totalling 854 million tonnes at 0.71% nickel and 0.045% cobalt, containing 6.1 million tonnes of nickel and 386,000 tonnes of cobalt. Ardea also pursues exploration across the project area, targeting nickel sulphide, scandium, and rare earth elements.
KNP Goongarrie Hub Awarded Lead Agency Status by Western Australian Government
Kalgoorlie Nickel Pty Ltd (KNPL), the incorporated joint venture entity behind the KNP Goongarrie Hub, submitted an application for Lead Agency Status to Western Australia's Department of Energy and Economic Diversification (DEED) in late 2025. DEED has since confirmed the application was successful, formally granting Lead Agency Status to the project.
Lead Agency Status is a government programme for projects of state significance. It provides coordinated engagement across multiple government departments and agencies through a single facilitation structure, covering approvals requirements and infrastructure planning. The framework operates alongside, rather than in place of, standard regulatory processes.
Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Andrew Penkethman, said:
"We are very pleased to receive confirmation from the Western Australian Government of the KNP Goongarrie Hub's Lead Agency Status. The KNP Goongarrie Hub represents one of the largest and most strategically significant nickel-cobalt development opportunities in the developed world, and this support reflects the Project's importance to Western Australia's and Australia's critical minerals ambitions."
Strategic Significance to Critical Minerals and Battery Materials Sector
The KNP Goongarrie Hub is situated in Western Australia's Eastern Goldfields region. The Goongarrie Hub accounts for 584 million tonnes of resource containing 4.0 million tonnes of nickel, while the broader KNP totals 854 million tonnes at 0.71% nickel and 0.045% cobalt, representing 6.1 million tonnes of contained nickel and 386,000 tonnes of contained cobalt. The project is described by the company as one of the largest nickel-cobalt resources in the developed world.
Nickel and cobalt are key inputs in batteries used in electric vehicles and stationary energy storage. The KNP Goongarrie Hub is positioned to supply these materials, and the Western Australian Government's recognition of the project's strategic significance reflects its role in Australia's critical minerals agenda.
Lead Agency Status formalises that recognition at the state level.
CEO and Managing Director, Andrew Penkethman, added:
"The KNP Goongarrie Hub is a potential cornerstone of Australia's battery materials industry, and we look forward to working closely with DEED, other government stakeholders, local communities and our joint venture partners as we advance this important project."
Coordinated Government Facilitation Supporting Project Approvals and Infrastructure
The Lead Agency Framework provides KNPL with a coordinated government facilitation structure as the project works through environmental approvals, stakeholder engagement, and infrastructure planning. The framework consolidates agency engagement into a single pathway, as is standard for projects assessed to be of material significance to state economic and industrial development.
CEO and Managing Director, Andrew Penkethman, noted:
“The KNP Goongarrie Hub now holds whole-of-government support including from the Commonwealth, reflecting alignment with Australia's broader critical minerals objectives at both the state and national levels.”
The joint venture partners, Mitsubishi Corporation and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., bring downstream battery materials expertise to the project. Their involvement places the KNP Goongarrie Hub within the context of Australia's and Japan's shared critical minerals cooperation interests.
Looking Ahead
With Lead Agency Status now confirmed, KNPL and its joint venture partners will continue advancing technical studies, environmental baseline programmes, and stakeholder engagement activities in parallel with the required approvals processes. The company has indicated it looks forward to working with DEED, government stakeholders, local communities, and its joint venture partners as development progresses. Near-term activity is expected to focus on these workstreams within the newly formalised Lead Agency framework.
