Bolivia has a rich mining history dating back to the pre-Columbian era. The Inca Empire used mercury in their silver production and the Spanish colonizers greatly expanded mining operations in the 16th century, particularly for silver. Bolivia became one of the largest silver producers in the world and its mining industry continued to thrive in the following centuries, with the discovery of other valuable minerals such as tin.

However, Bolivia's mining industry has also been marked by conflict and exploitation. Indigenous communities have long been subjected to forced labor and poor working conditions in mines, leading to uprisings and protests. The 1952 national revolution led to the nationalization of mines and the establishment of state-owned mining companies, but privatization efforts since the 1990s have led to increased foreign investment and controversy over environmental and social impacts. Today, Bolivia remains an important producer of minerals such as zinc, lead, gold, and lithium, with the latter becoming increasingly important for its growing role in battery production.
