Gold Rises 0.6%, but Mining Equities Gain More Than Triple

Gold rose 0.6% above $4,400 as Fed hike odds fell to 31%, while mining equities gained more than triple and traceability reforms advanced.
- Spot gold rose 0.6% to a two-month high of $4,402.49/oz as the dollar fell 0.3% and September Fed hike odds dropped to 31% from 51% a month earlier.
- Antofagasta, Hochschild Mining and Fresnillo gained 1.9%-2.3%, more than triple gold’s 0.6% rise.
- WGC and AGC signed a five-year MOU targeting formalization of artisanal and small-scale gold mining, which accounts for about 20% of global supply.
- Base case: Fed minutes reinforce a hold bias, keeping hike odds below 31% and supporting gold above $4,400/oz. Bear case: gasoline above $4/gallon lifts inflation risk and pushes hike odds back above 31%.
- Watch the CME FedWatch Tool: a move above 31% would signal the bear case is taking hold.
31% Fed Hike Odds Weaken the Dollar and Lift Gold Above $4,400
Spot gold rose 0.6% to a two-month high of $4,402.49/oz. December futures rose 0.5% to $4,458.70 as a 0.3% decline in the dollar lowered gold’s cost in other currencies.

The STOXX Europe 600 Basic Resources index gained 1.1%, while Antofagasta, Hochschild Mining and Fresnillo rose 1.9%-2.3%, more than triple gold’s 0.6% gain.
Softer US Data Cuts Rate Risk & Strengthens Gold’s Yield Advantage
Weaker US payrolls and softer inflation reduced pressure for another Fed hike, pushing September hike odds to 31% from 51% a month earlier. Lower hike odds reduce gold’s opportunity cost against interest-bearing assets while weaker US rates pressure the dollar.
Gasoline above $4/gallon could lift inflation and push Fed hike odds higher, weakening gold’s rate support. Markets also price an 84% chance of a 25-bp ECB hike in September, widening the rate gap with a Fed hold and adding pressure on the dollar.
20% Informal Gold Supply Creates a Five-Year Traceability Opportunity
Beyond Fed policy, gold formalization could expand traceable supply for institutional buyers. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining accounts for about 20% of global supply, but limited traceability restricts access to institutional markets. WGC and AGC signed a five-year MOU targeting processing infrastructure and origin-verification technology for artisanal gold supply.
Base case: Fed minutes reinforce a hold bias, pushing hike odds below 31% and supporting gold above $4,400/oz.
Bear case: Gasoline above $4/gallon lifts inflation pressure, pushes hike odds above 31%, and threatens gold’s hold above $4,400/oz.
Gold’s 0.6% Rise Drives Larger Gains Across Mining Equities
Mining equities amplified gold’s 0.6% gain. The STOXX Europe 600 Basic Resources index gained 1.1%, while Antofagasta, Hochschild Mining and Fresnillo rose 1.9%-2.3%, outpacing bullion. For gold miners, fixed costs can magnify margin gains when bullion rises faster than operating costs.
Fed minutes and the next inflation report create event risk that cannot be reliably timed. Mining equities carry more upside and downside volatility than bullion, so position sizes should reflect a higher risk budget.
31% Hike Odds Define the Risk Line, Track a Break Higher
The 31% September hike probability is a key rate signal supporting a weaker dollar and gold above $4,400/oz. If hike odds stay at or below 31%, a weaker dollar continues to support gold and gold-linked equities.
Gasoline above $4/gallon could lift inflation and push September hike odds back above 31%. That would strengthen the dollar and weaken rate support for gold and mining equities.
The Fed’s July minutes on Aug. 19 could shift September hike odds and gold’s support above $4,400/oz. Track the CME FedWatch Tool after the release: a move above 31% would signal the bear case.
