Gold’s Selloff Tests Unhedged Miners, but Cost Cuts Could Protect Margins

Central bank gold buying rose 42% year over year in Q3. Softer US payrolls could trim December Fed hike bets and help bullion recover toward $4,262/oz.

  • Spot gold fell 1% to $4,047.19/oz on November 6, 5% below its Q3 average, after the steepest US stock selloff since April 2025. Tim Waterer, Chief Market Analyst at KCM Trade, said traders sold gold to cover margin calls on other positions.
  • The World Gold Council reported on November 3 that central banks bought 321 metric tons of gold in Q3, up 42% year over year, and gold ETF holdings reached a record 4,256 metric tons.
  • If unhedged producers sell gold throughout Q4 at the November 6 spot price of about $4,047/oz and costs stay flat, margins per ounce would fall 9% from Q3 at Metals Focus’s Q1 2026 global average all-in sustaining cost of $1,785/oz and 13% at $2,600/oz.
  • On November 6, CME FedWatch put the odds of a December 9 Fed hike at 67%. Disclosed costs and hedges show which producers are most exposed to lower Q4 selling prices.
  • A return to the $4,262/oz Q3 average would restore Q3 margins on new unhedged sales if costs hold steady, with a larger percentage rebound at higher-cost mines.

Margin Calls Spur Gold Sales After the US Stock Rout

After US stocks posted their steepest drop since April 2025, spot gold fell 1% to $4,047.19 per ounce and December US gold futures fell 1.4% to $4,056.90. Tim Waterer, Chief Market Analyst at KCM Trade, said traders sold gold to cover margin calls on other positions.

Spot gold was 5% below its Q3 average of $4,262 per ounce and 17% below its record Q1 average of $4,873. Unhedged producers selling at that spot price would receive about $215 less per ounce than at the Q3 average.

Oil Rebound Could Weigh on Bullion by Keeping Rates High

Oil rose more than 1% on Middle East supply concerns. If higher energy prices feed into inflation, the Fed could keep rates higher for longer, making interest-paying assets more competitive with gold.

Even if forced selling fades, gold still faces a 67% chance of a Fed hike on December 9. Goldman Sachs cited the prospect of higher rates when it cut its year-end 2026 gold forecast from $4,650 to $4,150.

Weaker US Payrolls Could Help Gold Recover

US payrolls could shift rate expectations ahead of the December 9 Fed decision. Louise Street, Senior Markets Analyst at the World Gold Council, said gold’s outlook through year-end was finely balanced.

Strong hiring could sustain rate hike bets and weigh on gold, while weaker hiring could lower those odds and support a rebound. Central banks bought 675 metric tons through Q3, and continued buying could support prices as forced selling subsidies.

A rebound to $4,262 per ounce would restore the Q3 price on new unhedged sales. Early-2027 results will show producers’ average selling prices for the full quarter.

At $4,047/oz, Higher-Cost Mines Risk Steeper Margin Declines

If unhedged producers sell gold at $4,047/oz throughout Q4 and costs stay flat, margins per ounce would fall 9% from Q3 at Metals Focus’s Q1 2026 global average all-in sustaining cost of $1,785/oz and 13% at $2,600/oz.

B2Gold reported Q3 costs of $2,602/oz sold in its November 4 results and is targeting 2026 costs of $2,230 to $2,410/oz, down from $2,370 to $2,550/oz. Mike Cinnamond, President and Chief Executive Officer, attributed the lower target to operating leverage, which can reduce costs per ounce by spreading fixed costs across more production.

Every $1/oz reduction in costs offsets a $1/oz drop in the selling price, while disclosed hedges show how many ounces have price protection.

$215/oz Cost Cuts Could Preserve Third Quarter Margins

Margin-call selling added to pressure from Fed hike bets. In Q3, central banks added gold and ETF holdings reached a record even as gold traded below its record Q1 average.

If gold shares fall broadly, higher-cost producers that can deliver cost cuts may offer an opportunity. At $4,047/oz, cutting costs by about $215/oz from Q3 levels would preserve Q3 margins on new unhedged sales.
