Marimaca Promotes US$5.5 Billion Quellaveco Controller to Finance Chief Before Build
Marimaca Copper promotes Peter Garner-Winship, former Quellaveco Financial Controller, to Chief Financial Officer as it prepares to build in Chile.
Marimaca Copper has promoted Peter Garner-Winship to Chief Financial Officer, effective immediately. Garner-Winship joined the company in March 2026 as Vice President, Finance, after 17 years at Anglo American. His experience includes serving as Financial Controller for the US$5.5 billion Quellaveco copper project in Peru. José Antonio Merino continues as Managing Director (Chile) and will focus on the in-country development of the Marimaca Oxide Deposit (MOD).
Company Overview
Marimaca Copper Corp. (TSX: MARI | ASX: MC2) is a copper company focused on developing copper assets in northern Chile. Its flagship asset is the Marimaca Oxide Deposit (MOD) in the Antofagasta region, close to the city of Antofagasta and the port of Mejillones. The company also controls the Pampa Medina and Madrugador exploration properties in the Sierra de Medina region, 30 kilometers from the MOD, where recent drilling has identified oxide extensions and high-grade sulfide mineralization at depth.
Garner-Winship Steps Up From Vice President, Finance
Chief Financial Officer of Marimaca Copper, Peter Garner-Winship, was promoted to the role with immediate effect. He joined the company in March 2026 as Vice President, Finance, after 17 years with Anglo American in senior roles covering corporate finance, strategic planning, and capital allocation.
Chief Executive Officer and Director of Marimaca Copper, Hayden Locke, links the appointment to the financial controls the company now has to build:
"Peter was heavily involved in the set-up of the finance function for the successful Quellaveco construction in Peru and will leverage this experience to develop our own financial controls and systems. He also brings broad experience in financial reporting, capital allocation and risk management from his time at Anglo American. This is an important appointment as we prepare to progress the MOD through construction into production."
At Quellaveco, a US$5.5 billion copper project in Peru, Garner-Winship served as Financial Controller and helped build the project organization and finance function through construction and the transition into operations.
Merino Shifts Focus to Development & Permitting in Chile
Managing Director (Chile) of Marimaca Copper, José Antonio Merino, continues in that role, with a part in advancing the MOD and in the regional development and permitting strategy.
Locke points to the work Merino's team has completed since 2022:
"José Antonio has been an integral member of the Marimaca management team since 2022, leading the team that delivered numerous de-risking milestones, including our environmental permits, securing water supply, power connections, and commercial negotiations, our self-produced sulfuric acid strategy, and other commercial initiatives."
Handing the chief financial officer's responsibilities to Garner-Winship allows Merino to focus on leading all in-country aspects of the MOD's development, as well as the company's broader operational, permitting, and growth strategy in Chile.
